Important Information for Parents
Lake Hamilton School District
2011-2012 Inclement Weather Make-Up Plan
February 17 and 20, March 16, and April 27, 2012, are scheduled as days on which Lake Hamilton Schools will make-up any previously missed days due to bad weather. In the event that LHSD does not cancel any regular school day before the inclement weather days arrive, no classes will be held and students will be dismissed on these dates.
Why are make-up days scheduled in February, March and April instead of at the end of the calendar? This allows opportunities for lost teaching and learning time to be made up at a time when it will be more effective than at the conclusion of the school year. Teachers and students are more focused and both should perform better at times other than days in late May or early June. It further provides for some of the potential lost instructional time to be made up prior to required exams in April. This arrangement should also have less, if any, impact on any vacations or family time scheduled for June.
What if classes are not canceled on any school days before the scheduled make-up days? In this case, students (and most teachers and staff) will not attend on these dates. We deeply regret the apparent uncertainty as well as any additional child care burdens as an unintended result of our schedule. However, we believe that this is the best approach to optimize time for teaching, learning and increasing student achievement.
When will parents know if school is being held on make-up days? We will notify parents as soon as we make any changes regarding when students are expected to attend school.
How will parents know if school is being held on make-up days? The district will announce via written notification (backpack notes home), district website, and/or the mass telephone notification system changes in attendance days. It is important that we have your current preferred phone number on file for us to contact you concerning these and other matters.
Semester Exams
(Excerpt from LHJH Parent/Student
Handbook, p. 30)
Each
junior high student will take a cumulative semester exam in each required
course and some elective courses at the conclusion of the fall term. This exam will comprise 20% of the
semester grade. As a reward for
good attendance and academic performance, some students may be exempted from
semester exams in the spring, provided the following criteria are met.
-Students must
have an “A” or “B” average in a particular class and no
more than 6 absences for the second semester.
OR
-Students must
have a “C” average and no more than 3 absences for a particular
period the second semester.
There will be no distinction as to whether
an absence is excused (documented)
Or
unexcused (undocumented) for the purpose of determining semester exam
exemptions.
Absences are counted up to the final non-test day.
-A student must not have been assigned to In-School
Suspension, Out-of-School Suspension or
-A student
must acquire 50 points through the Accelerated Reading program in order to be
considered for exemption from semester exams. Exceptions to this qualification may be
made at the discretion of the student’s English teacher. Such exceptions will be based on
required modifications or length of enrollment at Lake Hamilton Junior High.
-Any student who has three or more unexcused tardies in
a particular class for the second semester will lose the test exemption
privilege.
-An exempted
student will not be required to take the second semester test in order to
establish the final semester grade.
If a student who is qualified for exemption chooses to take the final
test, his/her grade will not be reduced as a result of the exam grade.
-No second
semester tests will be given early.
