Having a driver's license and driving a car are privileges. Any privilege has to be earned and must be earned on a continuing basis. Since you will not be the licensed owner of the car nor responsible for its financial upkeep, driving privileges may be revoked due to an infraction of any of the following rules:
1. You agree to provide transportation to family members at the request of your parents. Fulfilling these obligations is a condition of your use of the car. Sometimes these responsibilities will override your own desires and interest in using the car.
2. It is your responsibility to protect the car you drive. You will keep it reasonably clean and maintained. You have specific responsibility regarding the maintenance of the car. Gas -maintained above one fourth of a tank, oil and air in tires checked monthly.
3. Breaking the driving laws or abusing a motor vehicle can result in the loss of driving privileges. You will not engage in any thrill-seeking behavior while driving nor will you drive for recreation. You will inform your parents of any accidents and any encounters with the police. If we learn about it from a source other than you, stiffer consequences can be imposed. You never know who may be observing you.
4. You will strive to maintain the grades for your good student insurance discount, conduct and attitude at the same high level as when we first granted your driving privileges.
5. You will ask permission to drive to a specific location and will discuss the route planned. You will be certain that your parents know where you are at all times.
6. You will be expected to communicate with one of us ahead of time should your plans need to change regarding where you are going to be or when you would like to be home.
7. No one else will be allowed to drive a vehicle entrusted to you. This means you may not lend your vehicle to friends regardless of the situation. If you think that there is an exception then call one of us first.
8. During the first six months that you drive, you may not give rides to friends unless express permission is given in advance by one of us. This period ends or may be extended at such time as we determine you have earned it.
9. If you are ever in a condition that might render you less than 100% competent behind the wheel of a car, for example, tired, sleepy, ill or under the influence, phone us. We will come get you this will not result in the loss of your driving privileges.
10. If you are ever fearful of being late to the time you are expected to be home, never drive faster then usual or recklessly trying to make that time, Call us and let us know you are running late. There will be no punishment involved unless we feel that it is being abused.
11. If you are going to be late to an event, school or appointments you are expected to follow the traffic laws and driving conditions. As the driver you are responsible to leave on time, the consequences of being late is less than those imposed for being unsafe.
12. You and all passengers are to wear seat belts at all times. You will not allow passengers to act in such a way as to damage the car or distract you.
13. You are expected to keep cell phone usage to a minimum, one to two minutes maximum if necessary tell the call you will call them back. Trying to handle a phone and drive at the same time will cause a distraction.
All contents of this agreement are subject to revision based on driving performance and behavior.
