Individualized English Instruction

 

Students who are tested with the LAS (Language Assessment Scales) upon enrollment, and found to be limited English proficient are placed in a daily pull-out program with an ESL instructional aide(with ESL endorsement classes) who works with individual students and with small groups. The ELDA-English Language Development Assessment exam is used each spring to assess English fluency.

All teachers are trained in ESL methods and strategies in order to provide the best modifications for the general classroom. Teacher training is ongoing and ESL building facilitators work with teachers who need additional support. Modifications are made in the classroom to correspond with the needs of individuals.

LEP students work on English language acquisition skills and are assisted in academic assignments durding ESL class. Modifications are made in the classroom to correspond with the needs of individuals. Students work on basic language skills and are assisted in the regular classroom work. They may use computers, focusing on Rosetta Stone, Inspiration, and Kidspiration.The Internet is also used to augment the lessons with information and exercises.
